Trimming and pruning mean the same thing to most people: cutting branches to make a tree safer, healthier or better looking. The key is how and where you cut.
Cut at the collar
Every branch has a slight bulge where it meets the trunk, called the branch collar. We cut just outside it. That lets the tree seal the wound. Cut flush with the trunk and you leave a big wound. Leave a long stub and it rots.
Never top a tree
Topping means chopping the top off a tree to make it shorter. It leaves big wounds, weak regrowth and a tree that’s more likely to break in the next storm.
We’re landscapers, not tree climbers. We work from the ground or a short ladder. Big trees, climbing work and anything near power lines go to a certified arborist, and we’ll tell you who to call.

When to prune
The best time for tree trimming and pruning
- Late winter: the best time for most trees. They’re dormant, you can see every branch and cuts close fast in spring.
- After bloom: dogwood, cherry and other spring bloomers get trimmed right after they flower.
- Any time: dead, broken or rubbing branches can come off whenever you see them.
- Oaks, not April to July: New York’s DEC advises against pruning oaks in these months because of oak wilt, a disease spread by beetles drawn to fresh cuts.
- Go easy in late summer: heavy pruning then pushes new growth that can get hurt by frost.
