Flower Bed Installation in Nassau County, Built From the Soil Up

Want a flower bed installation in Nassau County that still looks good in August? A lot of beds look great in May and tired by July. That’s usually because the soil was never fixed. We’re Arnol MR Landscaping, a father-and-son crew. We build beds from the soil up, so the flowers have something to grow in.

How we build a flower bed

  • Shape it: we lay out the shape with a garden hose, so you can see it before we dig.
  • Strip it: the grass comes out, roots and all.
  • Loosen and feed: we loosen the soil 8 to 12 inches deep and mix in compost.
  • Edge it: a clean trench edge keeps grass from creeping back.
  • Plant it: taller plants in back, shorter in front, spaced for their full size.
  • Mulch it: 2 to 3 inches, kept off the stems.

Long Island soil is mostly sandy. It drains fast and doesn’t hold much food for plants. Compost fixes both problems.

Sunny beds

Coneflower, black-eyed Susan, salvia, catmint and daylilies.

Shade beds

Hostas, ferns, astilbe and coral bells under the trees.

Native gardens

Local plants that need less water and feed bees and butterflies.

Seasonal color

Annuals tucked in for color from spring to frost.

Planting

Perennials, annuals or both?

Perennials come back every year. They cost more up front but you plant them once. Annuals last one season but bloom nonstop. Most of our beds use perennials for the backbone and a few annuals for extra color.

When to plant

Perennials can go in from spring through early fall. Tender annuals should wait until after the last frost, which on Long Island is usually safe by mid-May.

Sun matters

“Full sun” means six or more hours of direct sun a day. Most flowering plants need it. If your spot gets less, we plan a shade bed instead of fighting it.

Flower Bed Installation questions

What homeowners ask about flower bed installation in Nassau County

Who’s the best flower bed installation company near me?

One that talks about soil and sun before they talk about flowers. Ask what they do to the soil and how they pick plants for your spot.

What do I do if my flower bed looks great in spring but dies out by summer?

Check the soil and the sun. Sandy soil with no compost dries out fast in July. Mix in compost, keep mulch on the bed and water deeply once or twice a week instead of a little every day.

Can you add a flower bed to an existing lawn?

Yes. We cut out the grass, fix the soil and build the bed right into the lawn with a clean edge.

How much does flower bed installation cost?

It depends on the size of the bed and the plants you pick. Text a photo of the spot for a free quote.
