Sod gives you a green lawn the same day. But it only stays green if the roots grow down into good soil. Most of the work happens before the sod shows up.
How we install sod
- Clear: strip out the old grass and weeds.
- Loosen and amend: break up packed soil and add topsoil or compost where needed.
- Grade: level the ground and slope it away from the house.
- Lay: install the sod the day it arrives, seams tight and staggered like bricks.
- Roll and water: press it down so the roots touch soil, then soak it.

Dead spots and worn areas cut out and replaced.

Low spots filled and slopes fixed before the sod goes down.

Caring for new sod
Water every day at first
For the first two weeks, new sod needs water every day, sometimes twice in hot weather. The soil under it should stay damp. After that, water less often but deeper, so the roots grow down.
Stay off it
Keep kids, dogs and cars off new sod for the first two to three weeks. Lift a corner gently. If it holds tight, the roots have grabbed on.
First mow
Once it’s rooted and about 4 inches tall, we give it a first mow with the mower set high.
Best times to lay sod
Early fall and spring are best on Long Island. Sod can go down in summer, but it needs a lot more water to make it through July heat.

Before any digging, New York law says to call 811 at least two full working days ahead. They send someone to mark gas, electric and water lines for free. We make that call before we dig.
New lawns can be fed with a starter fertilizer. New York allows phosphorus fertilizer when you’re starting a new lawn, which isn’t the case for regular feedings.
