Weed Control in Nassau County for Beds and Lawns
Tired of doing weed control in Nassau County every weekend? Lots of people pull the same weeds out of the same bed every Saturday in June. Most of the time the real problem is bare soil. Weeds love bare soil, thin grass and a mower set too low. Fix those, and you pull a lot fewer weeds.
In the beds
We pull weeds by hand on every visit, roots and all, so they don’t go to seed. Then we keep 2 to 3 inches of mulch in the beds. Mulch blocks the light that weed seeds need to sprout.
In the lawn
The best weed control for a lawn is thick grass. We mow high, overseed thin spots and feed the lawn at the right times. Dense grass shades the soil so crabgrass and other weeds can’t get started.
Along walks and patios
Weeds in the cracks of walks and pavers get pulled or cut down on each visit, before they get big enough to push the pavers apart.

Timing
Crabgrass and the forsythia rule
Crabgrass is the weed we hear about most. It sprouts in spring once the soil warms up, grows fast in summer heat and dies at the first frost, leaving bare spots behind.
An old Long Island rule of thumb: put crabgrass preventer down while the forsythia bushes are in bloom. Once the yellow flowers drop, crabgrass starts sprouting, and a preventer put down after that doesn’t do much.
Don’t mix preventers with seeding
Crabgrass preventers stop grass seed from sprouting too. If you plan to overseed in spring, skip the preventer on those spots. That’s one reason we like to seed in late summer instead.
A note on weed killers
In New York, anyone who applies weed killer to a lawn for pay needs a pesticide certification from the state DEC. If a company offers to spray your lawn, ask to see it.

What do I do if my lawn is full of crabgrass?
Pull what you can before it seeds in late summer. In September, overseed the thin spots so grass fills in. Next spring, put down a crabgrass preventer while the forsythia is blooming, on spots you aren’t seeding.
Does mulch really stop weeds?
It stops most of them. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep blocks the light weed seeds need. A few will still blow in on top, but those are easy to pull.
