Mowing looks simple. It mostly is. But a few small habits decide if a lawn stays thick or thins out by August.
Mow high
Most Long Island lawns are cool-season grasses like tall fescue, bluegrass and ryegrass. They do best cut at about 3 to 3.5 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, keeps roots cooler and crowds out weeds. In a hot, dry stretch we raise the deck even higher.
Never cut more than a third
If the grass is 6 inches tall, taking it down to 2 in one pass shocks it. We take off about a third of the blade at a time. After a rainy week, that might mean a double cut a few days apart.
Sharp blades
A dull blade tears the grass instead of cutting it. The tips turn white and brown a day later. We sharpen our blades often so the cut is clean.

Trimmed along the walk, driveway, curb and fence every visit.
Clippings left behind
Short clippings break down fast and feed the lawn. We bag only when they clump.
Blown clean
Walks, driveway and patio cleared of clippings before we leave.
When we come
How often to mow a lawn on Long Island
In April, May and June the grass grows fast, so we mow every week. In July and August growth slows, and a lawn that isn’t watered may go every 10 days or so. In fall it picks back up until the first hard frosts in November.
Changing the pattern
Mowing the same direction every week packs down the soil in lines and makes the grass lean. We switch the pattern so the lawn stands up straight.
Wet grass
We try not to mow right after a heavy rain. Wet grass clumps, the mower slips and the wheels rut the lawn. If a storm hits on your day, we come back as soon as it dries.

- Garden City: landscapers need a village license. Work hours are Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Mineola: landscapers need a village permit. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.
- Bethpage, Plainview and Hicksville (Town of Oyster Bay): Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. No Sundays.
- Albertson, Roslyn Heights and Carle Place (Town of North Hempstead): Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No Sundays or holidays.

One that mows high, keeps blades sharp and shows up on the same day each week. Ask what height they cut at. If the answer is “as short as we can,” your lawn will struggle by July.
What do I do if my lawn turns brown in summer?
Tug on the brown grass. If it peels up like a carpet, it could be grubs. If it holds tight, raise the mower, water early in the morning and give it two weeks. Most cool-season lawns go dormant in heat and come back when it cools off.
Do you bag the clippings?
Usually not. Short clippings drop into the lawn and break down in a few days, which feeds the grass. We bag when the grass got long and the clippings would clump.
