Lawn Fertilization in Nassau County That Follows the Rules
Wondering when to do lawn fertilization in Nassau County? Most people feed the lawn on the first warm weekend in spring, because that’s when the stores put the bags out. Fertilizer gives grass the nitrogen it needs to grow thick and green. Too much, or at the wrong time, and you get fast floppy growth, more mowing, and fertilizer washing into the storm drains.
Slow and steady
We use slow-release fertilizer that feeds the lawn over several weeks instead of all at once. The grass stays greener longer, and less of it washes away in the next rain.
Clean up after
Fertilizer that lands on the driveway or walk goes straight into the storm drain with the next rain. We blow or sweep it back onto the lawn every time.
Early fall
The most important feeding of the year, in September.
Late fall
A last feeding in late October or November, before the December 1 ban.
Swept up
Any granules on hard surfaces go back on the lawn.
The rules
New York lawn fertilizer rules
New York State has rules about lawn fertilizer to protect the water. On Long Island, our drinking water comes from the ground under our feet, so these rules matter more here than most places.
- No fertilizer December 1 to April 1: New York State bans lawn fertilizer during these months.
- No phosphorus, most of the time: lawn fertilizer with phosphorus is only allowed for a new lawn or when a soil test shows the lawn needs it.
- Keep it off pavement: any fertilizer that lands on a driveway, walk or street has to be swept back up.
- Keep it away from water: no fertilizer within 20 feet of a pond, stream or other water, unless there is a 10-foot planted buffer.
