We use a core aerator. It pulls small plugs of soil, about 2 to 3 inches long, out of the lawn. The holes let air, water and food get down to the roots. The plugs sit on top and break down in a week or two. Leave them. They go back into the lawn.

When to aerate
The best time for lawn aeration on Long Island
Late August through September is the best time. Cool-season grass is growing hard, the soil is still warm and the holes fill in fast. It’s also the best time to overseed, so we often do both on the same day. Spring works too, but crabgrass also loves the open soil.
