Hard edges
Along concrete and pavers, we cut a straight vertical line so the grass stops right at the edge. We do this every visit so it never grows over.
Bed edges
Around flower beds and shrub beds, we cut a small trench, a few inches deep, with a flat spade. The trench keeps grass roots from creeping into the bed and gives the mulch a place to sit. We recut bed edges each spring and touch them up during the season.

Edging is more than looks. A clean bed edge means less grass in the beds, so there’s less weeding. A mulch ring around a tree keeps the string trimmer away from the bark, which is one of the most common ways young trees get hurt.
Curved or straight?
Smooth, wide curves are easier to mow around than tight wiggles. If your beds have odd shapes that make mowing hard, we can reshape them when we recut the edge in spring.
Permanent edging
Some people want a border that stays put, like steel, stone or pavers. It costs more up front but cuts down on touch-ups. Ask us if it makes sense for your beds.
