Most people dont think about snow until the night before a nor’easter. Then everyone texts at once. The homes that get cleared first are the ones already on a route. That’s why the best time to set up snow removal in Nassau County is October or November, while the leaves are still coming down.
Our Nassau County snow removal is simple. We focus on the parts of a home you actually walk on: the driveway, the front walk and the steps up to the door. We dont do big parking lots or commercial plazas. Keeping it small lets us pay attention to each property on the list.

A good snow removal service in Nassau County starts work in the fall, not after the first flake. A little prep keeps your lawn, curb and shrubs in one piece come spring.
Marking lawn edges and curbs
Once the snow covers everything, nobody can tell where the driveway ends and the grass begins. That’s how lawns get torn up. Before the ground freezes, we put in tall stakes along the driveway edge, the walk and the curb. Then we can see the lines even in the dark. It’s one of the first jobs on our snow removal service in Nassau County each fall.
Where the snow goes
Snow has to go somewhere, and the street is not the answer. Pushing it into the road is against the rules in some villages, and it just gets thrown back by the town plow anyway. We pick spots on your property with you, usually a lawn corner or the side of the driveway, away from the steps so melt water doesnt run back across the walk and freeze.
Protecting shrubs from snow piles
Heavy wet snow piled on boxwoods, yews and hollies can snap branches or split them open down the middle. We keep piles off foundation plantings and away from young trees. If you have shrubs right next to the driveway, tell us which ones, and we’ll pile on the other side. Some people also tie up upright evergreens with twine in late fall so they dont splay open.

Salt vs plant-safer ice melt
Rock salt is cheap and it works. The problem is where it ends up. Every time you shovel or the snow melts, salty water runs off the driveway and into the grass. By April you get a brown strip along the driveway and the walk, right where the salt washed in. Salt also pulls water away from roots, so shrubs near the steps can look burned in spring. It’s the most common thing people complain about with snow removal in Nassau County.
Near lawns and beds our Nassau County snow removal crew uses a plant-safer ice melt insted of plain rock salt. It costs a bit more, but its easier on grass, plants and concrete. We also use less of it. A light even coat works better then a thick handful thrown on the steps. On Long Island we get alot of freeze-thaw days, so a thin coat that you refresh beats a heavy one.
A few habits that help
- Clear first: ice melt works best on a thin layer, not under 3 inches of snow.
- Sweep leftovers: once the walk is dry, sweep extra pellets back up so they dont wash into the lawn.
- Hold off on fertilizer: New York State bans lawn fertilizer from December 1 to April 1, so a salt-burned lawn waits until spring to get fed.

Who’s the best snow removal service near me?
The best Nassau County snow removal service for you is one that is already working on your block, answers texts, and knows where your lawn ends. Ask how they handle the snow piles and what they put down on the steps. If the answer is “a bucket of rock salt,” your grass will pay for it in April. A crew that also takes care of the yard in summer has a reason to be careful.
What do I do if the plow buried the end of my driveway?
Almost every storm we get texts about this. The town plow comes by after your driveway is clear and leaves a heavy wall of packed snow at the curb. Its annoying, but it’s normal. The trick is to clear a spot to the left of your driveway (as you face the street) before the plow comes. Then the plow drops less snow in front of the driveway. What do I do if ice keeps forming on my steps?
Usually its melt water. Snow on a roof or a pile next to the steps melts in the afternoon sun, runs across the steps and freezes at night. Look for a gutter or downspout that dumps right there, and move the pile further away. A light coat of ice melt in the late afternoon helps before it freezes over.
What do I do if salt killed the grass by the driveway?
Wait for spring rain to wash the salt thru the soil. In April, water that strip deeply a few times to flush it. Then rake out the dead grass and overseed. If the same strip dies every year, switch to a plant-safer ice melt next winter or put a stone edge along the driveway. Our lawn care service page has more on spring seeding.
