Shrub Planting in Nassau County, Right Plant, Right Spot

Need shrub planting in Nassau County? We often meet people who replaced the same shrubs two years in a row. Most of the time they were planted too deep, in a spot that stayed wet. We’re Arnol MR Landscaping, a father-and-son crew, and we plant shrubs so they only have to go in once.

Planted right

Shrub Planting

Most shrubs that die in the first year die from how they were planted, not what they are. Depth, water and the right spot make the difference.

Wide hole, not deep

We dig a hole two to three times as wide as the root ball, but no deeper. The top of the root ball sits level with the ground or a little higher. Plant it too deep and the roots can’t breathe.

Loosen the roots

Shrubs from a pot often have roots circling around the inside. We loosen them so they grow out into the soil instead of choking the plant.

Water the first year

New shrubs need about an inch of water a week their first season, more in hot weather. We’ll tell you how much for each plant.

Foundation shrubs

Plants along the house that stay below the windows.

Flowering shrubs

Hydrangeas, azaleas and more for color through the season.

Replacements

Dead or overgrown shrubs swapped out for better fits.

Picking plants

Choosing shrubs for Long Island yards

We pick shrubs based on sun, space and how much care you want to give them. A few that do well here:

  • Sun: spirea, potentilla, knockout roses and many hydrangeas.
  • Part shade: azaleas, rhododendrons and oakleaf hydrangea.
  • Evergreen: inkberry holly, boxwood and yew for year-round green.
  • Near the driveway: salt-tolerant shrubs like bayberry and rugosa rose, since plow salt hits this strip hardest.

Best times to plant

Spring and early fall. Cooler air and warm soil give roots time to settle before summer heat or a hard freeze.

Shrub Planting questions

What homeowners ask about shrub planting in Nassau County

Who’s the best shrub planting company near me?

One that asks about sun, space and water before picking a plant, and tells you how big it will get. Ask how deep they plant and what they do with circling roots.

What do I do if my new shrub is turning brown?

Check the soil a few inches down. Dry means water more. Soggy means water less, or the spot drains poorly. Brown in the first few weeks is often transplant stress and grows out. Text us a photo if you’re not sure.

How far from the house should I plant shrubs?

At least half the shrub’s full-grown width, plus a foot or two. That leaves room for air flow and for you to paint or fix the siding.

How much does shrub planting cost?

It depends on the size and number of shrubs. Text a few photos of the spot for a free quote.
