Need seeding and overseeding in Nassau County? Every spring people throw grass seed on bare spots, and every July those spots are bare again. Spring seed has to fight crabgrass and summer heat. We’re Arnol MR Landscaping, a father-and-son crew, and we seed when grass has the best shot at making it.
Thicker grass
Seeding and Overseeding
Seeding means planting grass on bare soil. Overseeding means spreading seed over an existing lawn to fill in thin spots. Both need the seed to touch soil, stay damp and get enough sun.
How we do it
- Mow low and rake: a short cut and a rake let the seed reach the soil.
- Aerate: seed that drops into aeration holes sprouts better.
- Seed: the right blend for your sun and shade.
- Feed: a starter fertilizer to help new roots.
- Water: light watering once or twice a day until it sprouts.

Timing
The best time for seeding on Long Island
Mid-August through September is the best window. The soil is still warm so seed sprouts fast, the air is cooling off and most weeds are done for the year. New grass gets two good months of growing before winter.
After it sprouts
Ryegrass sprouts in about a week. Bluegrass can take two to three. Keep watering lightly until it’s all up, then water less often but deeper. Wait to mow until the new grass is about 3 to 4 inches tall.
Spring seeding
It can work, but it’s harder. Crabgrass sprouts at the same time, and crabgrass preventers stop grass seed too. If you seed in spring, skip the preventer on those spots.
