Most lawns here are cool-season grass: Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass and fescue. They love spring and fall. They struggle in July and August. Good lawn care in Nassau County is mostly about helping the grass get thru summer without getting stressed, then building it back up in the fall.
We look at a few things first. How much sun does the lawn get? Is the soil hard as a sidewalk? Is it being cut to short? Those three answers explain alot of the brown and thin spots we see.

Weekly mowing is the heart of any lawn care service in Nassau County. People think the mower does all the work, but the height does. We keep grass at about 3 to 3.5 inches in summer. Taller grass shades the soil, holds water better, and crowds out crabgrass. Cutting short makes a lawn look great for two days and brown by August.
We also keep sharp edges along the walk, driveway and curb, and we blow clippings back onto the lawn, not into the street.
Watering the right way
The easiest Nassau County lawn care tip: water early in the morning, before 9 if you can. Watering at night leaves the blades wet for hours, wich is how fungus starts. Deep watering two or three times a week beats a little bit every night.
What do I do if my lawn turned brown overnight?
First, dont panic. Grab a handful of the brown grass and tug. If it lifts up like a rug with no roots, its probly grubs. Almost every August we get texts about this one. It’s the most common Nassau County lawn care call of the summer. Grubs eat the roots and the lawn just peels back. If the grass holds tight and you see round brown patches with a darker ring, that’s usually brown patch, a fungus that loves hot, humid July nights. If it’s dry and crunchy everywhere, it may just be heat dormancy, and it will green back up after some rain. Text us a photo and we’ll tell you wich one it looks like.
Core aeration
Compacted soil is behind alot of Nassau County lawn care problems. Aeration pulls small plugs so water, air and roots can get down. Fall is the best time, right before seeding.
Fall feeding
Fall is the most useful time to feed a lawn. In New York, no lawn fertilizer is allowed from December 1 to April 1, so we plan around that.

Sometimes the problem isnt the grass. It’s the shape of the lawn, and good lawn care in Nassau County fixes that too. Low spots that hold water, bumpy ground from old roots, or a bed line that wobbles all over. Lawn landscaping fixes the lawn itself so its easier to mow and looks planned.
We straighten or curve bed edges, fill and level low spots with topsoil, and cut the lawn back from spots where grass will never grow.
What do I do if my grass keeps dying under the trees?
Big oaks and maples are all over, and shade is the biggest headache in Nassau County lawn care. Grass hates deep shade and root competition. Raise the mower in shady areas. Overseed in fall with a shade blend heavy in fine fescue. Rake leaves fast in the fall so they dont smother it. If a spot gets less than about 4 hours of sun, grass may never do well there. That’s when we suggest a mulch bed or ground cover insted of fighting it every year.

Grass Seeding
Thin lawns fill in with seed, not with more fertilizer. Timing is everything in Nassau County lawn care. Late August thru September is the best window on Long Island. The soil is still warm, the nights are cooler, and weeds are slowing down. Seed put down in May has to survive its first summer as a baby, and alot of it doesnt make it.
For overseeding, we usually aerate first, then spread seed so it lands in the holes and touches soil. Seed sitting on top of thatch just feeds the birds. After that, keep the top of the soil damp with light watering once or twice a day until the new grass is up.
What do I do if dogs or kids wore bare paths in the lawn?
Worn paths come from traffic and packed-down soil. Loosen the soil, add a little topsoil, and seed with a tougher blend that has more perennial ryegrass. Keep traffic off for a few weeks if you can. If the dog runs the same line every day, a stepping stone path or a mulched run may work better then grass.

Hydroseeding
Hydroseeding is seed, mulch and starter mixed with water and sprayed on the ground. The green mulch holds moisture and keeps the seed from washing away. It works best on large bare areas, slopes, and yards that got torn up after a pool, patio or drainage project.
It’s the part of our lawn care service in Nassau County people ask about most after a big project. It costs less than sod for big spaces. The trade-off is time. You wait a few weeks for it to fill in, and it needs steady watering until then.

Sod Installation
Sod gives you a green lawn the same day, and it’s the fastest fix any lawn care service in Nassau County can offer. But sod laid on bad ground fails fast. Most of the job is prep. We clear the old lawn, loosen and level the soil, and add topsoil where it’s low, then roll the sod tight with the seams staggered like bricks.
Watering new sod
The first two weeks matter most. Water every day so the soil under the sod stays wet, not just the top of the grass. Lift a corner. If the soil underneath is dry, it needs more. After the roots grab, cut back to deeper watering a few times a week. Stay off it until it’s rooted and dont mow until it holds tight when you tug.

Town rules shape Nassau County lawn care schedules too. Garden City bans gas leaf blowers from the Saturday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the Town of North Hempstead (Albertson, Roslyn Heights, Carle Place) bans them for commercial landscapers June 15 to Sept 15. That changes how summer cleanup gets done, so we plan for it.

How often should my lawn be mowed?
Once a week in spring and early summer when grass grows fast. In a dry stretch in July or August, every other week is often enough. Never cut off more than a third of the blade at once.
When is the best time to seed a lawn on Long Island?
Late August through September. The soil is still warm, nights are cooler, and weeds are slowing down. Spring seeding can work, but summer heat is hard on young grass.
Can I fertilize my lawn in winter in New York?
